
Take a look at this Starrett 1025-6 Stainless Steel Pocket Slide Caliper, 6" Size, 0 - 4-3/4" Outside Range, 1/4 - 5" Inside Range Good except for...By someonesdadAt about $175, this little measuring device is expensive, quite expensive. In fact, it's mechanically simple: a frame, a slider and a locking screw. That said, it's also manufactured with Starrett's usual finesse -- as a long time amateur machinist, I can tell that the beveled slider fits into the beveled slot with clearances measured well below 0.001 inches -- closer to 0.0001 inches. I only gave it three stars because of the bonehead decision to make the scale with 32nd of an inch divisions on one and 64th of an inch on the other. Personally, I hate using fractions of an inch, as they always wind up getting converted to decimal. I would have preferred to have decimal inches (in 50ths of an inch) on one scale and mm on the other. The other side of the scale has an auxiliary scale graduated in 32nds of an inch.Now, I've wanted one of these things for 40+ years, but could never justify the expense.
